How to Choose the Best Spinning Reels
As any fishing expert will tell you, you need a fishing pole, line, and reel that match the kind of fish you want to catch. If you want just to fish for trout or some other small freshwater species, a light reel with a light fishing line will do just fine.
Our friends from Flukemaster have a detailed video on How to Cast a Spinning Reel, before reading our own guideline, just have a look what they got to say:
Material
The most common materials for fishing reels are graphite and aluminum. Generally speaking, aluminum is more durable, but graphite is lighter. If you are out fishing for hours, a lighter material may be better as it will reduce the strain on your hands and wrist.
However, if you are wrestling big catches, you probably want something much more heavy-duty. Some reels even have a stainless steel shaft, making them much stronger.Keep in mind that a reel is only really as strong as the pole to which it’s attached, so make sure that if you go with a heavy-duty reel, you have a pole (and line) to match.
Size
The size of the reel will largely depend on the weight of the line you will be using. Typically, the weight rating of your line will match the size of your reel. For example, a lighter line will require a smaller model and vice versa.
Gear Ratio
When it comes to spinning reels, the gear ratio determines how fast you can retrieve your line. For most reels, the ratio is about 4:1 or 5:1, which means that for every spin of the handle, the line wraps around four or five times.
The higher the gear ratio, the faster you can recover your line (and presumably the fish attached), but high-speeds can also make tangles occur much quicker, so you have to be sure you know what you’re doing if you get something with a high gear ratio. If you’re a novice, a 4:1 should be sufficient, but a pro may even go as high as 6:1 if he thinks he can handle it.
Drag
For spinning reels, the drag system is either front or rear. What this means is the placement of the drag controls. If you want easier access, then rear drag is better, but it’s not quite as powerful as front-drag. If you plan on fighting big fish, you may want to opt for a front system.
